Acne and Skin Care

At Garam Acupuncture you will be treated by our licensed skin care professionals. All of our acne and skin care treatments are safe and natural. At the initial appointment we will analyze the root cause of the skin condition, which is some form of imbalance in the body. We then treat the internal imbalance and the resulting acne or other skin condition using a combination of acupuncture and facial techniques. By treating the underlying cause, our patients experience long lasting improvements not just in their skin, but in their overall health as well.

Our skin is one of the most vulnerable organs of our body. Though seldom life threatening, skin disorders can be very uncomfortable and may cause chronic disabilities. In addition, because skin is so visible, skin disorders can lead to psychological stress. Skin problems such as acne, acne scars, wrinkles and enlarged pores, affect more than 10 million Americans. These conditions can be one of the most frustrating and stubborn group of symptoms to successfully treat. Many pharmaceutical solutions offer quick relief but do not provide a lasting solution, and come with risks such as toxic build-up in the body and weakening of other organ systems. More and more people are choosing alternative solutions, which are safer and which address the root cause of the symptoms instead of covering it up each time it re-appears.

What is Acne?

Human skin has tiny pores which are connected via follicles (small canals) to oil glands under the skin. These glands produce Sebum, an oily liquid. When follicles get blocked, oil gets trapped and is not able to flow through the canals to the skin surface. This results in the accumulation of oil under the skin and bacteria begins to grow.

Types of Acne Scars

  • Boxcar scar

  • Rolling scar

  • Ice-pick scar

How Acne Forms

  • 1) Clogged pore

  • 2) Sebum forms a lump (food for bacteria)

  • 3) Bacteria grows

  • 4) Increase of bacteria resulting in inflammation and puss (acne)

External Causes of Acne

  • Weather: too damp, too dry, too dusty

  • Irregular eating and sleeping habits

  • Too much friction on skin

  • Chemical toxins

Internal Causes of Acne

  • Constitution

  • Digestive problems

  • Emotional stress

  • Gynecological / hormonal imbalance

Acne Treatment

Acne can be caused by stress, seasonal factors, premenstrual syndrome, atopic dermatitis and acne neonatorum. Types of treatments include Herb Treatments (topical lotions and teas to drink) as well as micro-needle treatments. Acne treatments will vary depending on the type of acne. Most of my clients see positive results within 60 days. After the treatment, the number and severity of acne sores are reduced and the condition can then be treated with home care.

Acne Treatment Methods

Herb Treatment

There are many types of herbs we use to decrease inflammation, redness of skin and kill bacteria, such as Schisandra Fruit, Root of Angelica and Mulberry Root Bark. We make a tea out of these herbs which our patients drink to help heal the internal underlying problems which cause acne. We also spray a special herbal essence solution topically on the affected area, helping to alleviate surface sores and to promote healing. From a Traditional Oriental Medicine perspective, for example, facial acne are symptoms caused by problems in our internal organs such as intestines, liver and digestive system. Herb treatment and acupuncture skin care treatment prescribes treatment of individuals by focusing on internal care.

AMTS (Auto Multi-needle Therapy System)

Auto Multi-needle Therapy System can be used to treat the affected acne area and to stimulate the dermis layer, which is the second layer of our skin. Provides an effective solution for reducing blemishes and acne scars. Helps regenerate dermis of skin and remove dead skin.

After Care

After your AMTS and acupuncture treatment, we use an icing machine along with therapy treatment to cool down your sensitive skin, which also helps improve dermis regeneration. We also apply a calming mask to calm the skin down.

Home Care in Between Office Treatments

In between the weekly treatments in our office, we supply cream and herbal essence extract spray for you to apply daily, which reduces excess sebum (skin oil) production and inflammation and also removes dead skin.

At Home Post-Treatment Maintenance

After your treatments are done, we recommend products for you to use at home to maintain your now great skin. We also recommend a maintenance treatment in our office ever other month.

Types of Enlarged Pores

  • Enlarged pores with blackheads

  • Enlarged pores with redness

  • Enlarged pores with thick skin

  • Enlarged pores with poor skin elasticity

  • Enlarged pores with keratosis (skin bumps)

What is Pore-Minimizing Treatment?

Enlarged pores can be caused from aging, sun damage, irritation from cosmetic products, etc. They are very difficult to treat. Other treatments that are available are laser treatments, peeling and facial massage. Laser treatments are very expensive. One must be cautious with peeling because it can have side effects if one is not very careful. Facial massage alone is not an effective long term solution. Our all-natural treatment is much more cost effective and has great long term benefits. Our treatment incorporates AMTS, acupuncture and herbal peeling. There are no side effects. You can see results in around 60 days.

Transtherapy

Transtherapy treats around enlarged pores. Normally, pores are dug deep into the skin layer and they are hard to reach with laser stimulation. Also treatment with peeling devices can be effective in regenerating cells, but it blends regular skin tissues around pores, making them look wider. Transtherapy, on the other hand, directly stimulates skin tissue and naturally induces stimulation.

AMTS (Auto Multi-needle Therapy System)

Sometimes when you stretch your skin around the area with enlarged pores, it may seem smaller due to the temporary disappearance of fine wrinkles which de-emphasizes the size of the pores. Using AMTS, pores that are enlarged due to loss of elasticity in the skin can be treated by restoring skin elasticity, thereby decreasing fine wrinkles and minimizing the size of the pores.

What is Rejuvenation Therapy?

This therapy reduces wrinkles by applying sterile micro needles to your skin. The needles create microscopic channels deep into the dermis of the skin which stimulate the cells’ ability to regenerate collagen, elastin and proteins naturally. This tightens the skin and reduces the appearance of wrinkles. Results are seen within 2 to 3 months, with no side effects. Restore your natural beauty by a few treatments and simple procedures. Acne and Skin Care Acupuncture FAQ

Is Acupuncture effective for treating Skin Disorders?

Yes, in fact dermatology is a recognized specialty in Traditional Oriental Medicine (also called Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)). Treatments for skin disorders have been described as early as 1100-221 BC in China. Throughout the United States today, many patients are frustrated with stubborn skin conditions that are not satisfactorily treated using Western medications, or they find that results do not last consistently. Acupuncture and Chinese herbs offer a natural solution to improving skin conditions.

What types of skin conditions can Acupuncture and Chinese Herbs treat?

The most common skin conditions treated are acne, rosacea, dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis, and dry or itchy skin.

According to Chinese Medicine, what causes skin conditions?

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the body is a whole system of interconnected parts. Although skin problems manifest externally, their root causes are often complex, and involve internal imbalances between qi (the body's energy), blood, yin, yang, and different energetic systems of the body. Usually the pathology involves a combination of internal imbalances and external pathological environmental factors. Internal imbalances include: a weak immune system, digestive disorders, poor diet, unbalanced lifestyle, stress, genetic constitution and unbalanced emotions. Pathological external environmental factors are often weather related and which invade the body causing symptoms to appear on the skin. Examples of recognized environmental factors involved in skin conditions are as follows. These aspects of diagnosis are often seen in combination with each other.

  • Heat: characterized by appearance of redness, burning or heat sensation, and symptoms worsens with alcohol, anger/stress, hot/spicy food, and hot weather.

  • Wind: characterized by quick onset, and movement of symptoms to different areas of the body, itchiness, and aversion to wind.

  • Damp: characterized by oozing or weeping conditions, feeling of body heaviness. Dampness can also be an internally generated factor worsened by eating rich, oily or dairy foods.

  • Dry: characterized by scaly itchy skin which is worse in dry, winter or autumn weather.

  • Cold: characterized by open sores, purplish color, wet discharge and slow healing, and usually a chronic condition.

How are internal body imbalances analyzed?

Important factors are considered before making each individual diagnosis and treatment plan. Aside from careful inspection of the exterior skin condition, relevant information includes the type of outbreak, color, temperature, foods, activities, climates or emotions that affect the symptoms, details about onset, duration and frequency of the problem, along with any other signs in the body including digestion, energy, emotions, sleep, and immune system.

How are skin conditions (acne, acne scars, wrinkles, enlarged pores) treated?

Every condition for each individual patient is unique and is treated as such. It is usually very important to use Chinese herbs on a daily basis, taken both internally and applied topically to the skin. This combined with acupuncture once or twice a week. In addition, dietary changes are often recommended, since metabolism of certain food can contribute to skin conditions.

An example of how Chinese Medicine would treat eczema is by:

  • Strengthening the immune system, thereby decreasing sensitivity to external or environmental hazards

  • Balancing the internal organ systems and treating the internal imbalances that are contributing to or causing eczema

  • Releasing toxins from the skin, thereby eliminating the itchy, red rash

  • Building the yin and blood, which help nourish and repair damaged skin

How long does it take to get results?

The amount of time it takes for skin conditions to resolve varies depending on duration and severity of the condition. In general, results are sometimes noticed as early as one week into treatment, but often take several months to clear up significantly. This is because it takes longer to balance the body from the inside out, rather than just address the problem topically or temporarily. However, the treatment of the whole body, rather than just the skin, is the key to eliminating the problem and not just covering it up. According to Chinese medicine, when a chronic condition has settled in the skin, it is an indication that the person's general health has been compromised for quite a long time. Treating skin conditions with Chinese medicine is well worth the time and patience it requires. A healthy balanced body is significantly less likely to have a recurrence of the skin condition.
